Diary of a Crescent Princess

Having a child with a chronic illness can be challenging, to say the least. Parents often think of outlets to relieve the stress and anxiety of the adult by practicing forms of self-care, but what about the child’s stress and anxiety living with the condition daily? As a parent of a child living with sickle cell disease, I encourage my daughter to use her creativity to express her feelings–the joys, the pains, good days, and not-so-great days. The following excerpt is a writing that she would like to share about living with sickle cell disease. With her permission, I am sharing this in hopes that she serves as an inspiration for anyone dealing with the challenge of an illness or maybe just having a not-so-great kind of day.

Hi! My name is Carsyn. I have sickle cell disease so, my life is a tiny tiny little bit hard. But, I deal with it anyway. So I take medicine to help me. But sometimes I have to go to the hospital, it’s ok though. The cool thing about it is my mom wrote a book about it. It is called Clemmie and she did a good job.
So that is part of my life 🙂”
